Clocktower history

Croydon Clocktower is an arts and cultural venue situated in the heart of Croydon. Described by Time Out as ‘The Jewel in Croydon’s crown’, the current Clocktower arts venue opened in 1993.

The Braithwaite Hall

The wonderfully atmospheric Braithwaite Hall was originally designed and constructed as a reference and lending library.

Opened in May 1896 as part of Croydon’s new Municipal Buildings complex, the hall was named in memory of the Rev. John Masterman Braithwaite, Dean and Vicar of Croydon, who was prominent in the movement for free public lending libraries.

One of his seven children was to become Dame Lilian Braithwaite - the famous actress; so it is fitting that almost all of Croydon Clocktower’s live performances take place in this unique Victorian building.

The hall has a grade II listed interior with an open hammer-beamed roof rising an impressive forty-three feet above the oak floor, the wood panelled walls are ringed by a minstrel's gallery, lined with leather bound books. Beautiful stained-glass windows complete this unique venue’s superb ambience.

Clocktower History

David Lean Cinema

Named after the Croydon-born director of cinematic masterpieces including Lawrence of Arabia and Brief Encounter, the David Lean Cinema is Croydon’s only independent cinema.

It's an intimate, air-conditioned oasis where the most popular films aren't necessarily blockbusters and where a well-crafted script and skilful cinematography are valued as highly as a pretty face and the latest special effects.

We certainly don't ignore the mainstream but we do make room for the underground, independent and quirky.

Clocktower Partnerships

Croydon Clocktower regularly works in partnership with organisations including the London International Mime Festival, London Film Festival, Xposure London and London Mozart Players amongst others.

Croydon Clocktower is directly managed by Croydon Council and supported by:
Arts Council England
Heritage Lottery Fund
UK Film Council Lottery Fund
